WordPress Development Agency

Creator has been building on WordPress since 2014, for FTSE 100 marketing teams, universities and businesses whose website is the thing that pays the wages. We're a UK WordPress development agency based in Durham – enterprise builds, headless frontends, and the unglamorous work of keeping a large estate upright afterwards.

WordPress at the size where it stops being simple

A brochure site and a twelve-thousand-post estate are the same CMS on paper and nothing alike in practice. Somewhere past a certain size an autoloaded wp_options table, a taxonomy nobody has pruned since 2019 and four plugins doing the same job in three different ways start deciding your time to first byte for you. We've been called in to sort that out enough times that we can usually guess the culprit before we've been given a login.

Most of the enterprise work we take on isn't a rebuild. It's a site that grew sideways for six years and now needs somebody to make decisions about it – which is less exciting than a redesign and more often than not it's what actually moves the numbers.

Talk to us about your WordPress project
Multi-editor estates, real publishing workflows, staging that matches production, and deployments that don't involve anybody dragging files into an FTP client. We write for whoever inherits the site after us, because somebody always does, and we've been that person often enough to know how it feels to open a functions.php nobody has commented since 2017.
WordPress as the editing experience your team already knows, a Nuxt or Vue frontend for everybody else, WPGraphQL or the REST API in between. It's the right call more often than it used to be. It's still asked for more often than it's needed (cough cough), and we'll tell you which one yours is.
Custom blocks your editors can actually use, and a move to block themes when there's a reason for it. Plenty of estates are still on classic themes and ACF and are perfectly happy there – we'll say so rather than sell you a rebuild you don't need yet.
Profiling first. Object caching, query work, image handling, and hosting sized for what the site actually does rather than what the brochure said in 2018. We measure before and after, and we'll show you both numbers even when the second one is less impressive than we'd hoped.
Taking over sites we didn't build, and moving sites that need moving. Redirects and data integrity get planned before anything happens, and the rollback is one we've tested rather than assumed.
Somebody who already knows your site when it breaks on a Friday afternoon. Updates, security patching, monitoring, and a phone that gets answered.

Twelve years on the same CMS

Creator started in 2014 and WordPress has been in the stack the whole way through. That's long enough to have shipped through the widget era, the page-builder era and now blocks, and long enough to have opinions about all three. Stores we've built have taken millions in revenue on WooCommerce, and the one I'd point at first went live years ago and is still quick today, because it was built to scale rather than rescued into scaling later.

We've got things wrong too. We've written custom plugins for problems a fifty-quid licence had already solved, and we've been talked into a headless build on a project that would have been better served by a good theme and an afternoon spent on caching (I've since got better at saying so in the first meeting). You get senior people, and you get the answer we'd give if it were our own site.
